Baseball Roundup

We hear about unlucky and lucky pitchers all the time, so on a lark I broke down pitchers that were “luck-neutral” all-stars for FanGraphs. It turns out, perhaps unsurprisingly, that Jake Westbrook is the tuna-swiss of pitchers. He is who we think he is, most years. It’s not that great, but there must be some value in knowing what your getting. Or maybe we just assume that because, hey, people order tuna-swiss sandwiches at the deli all the time, right?

Up on NotGraphs today, I also interviewed Matthew Leach, the Cardinals beat reporter for MLB.com. The series is a little selfish – I’m asking writers how they got to be where they are, mostly. But Leach also is reporting on a clubhouse that includes Albert Pujols, who is mired in a will-he-or-won’t-he contract negotiation currently. Leach had some really interesting things to say about how manager Tony La Russa manages a club house and how the negotiations affect interactions between players and journalists.

I write. About baseball, mostly, but also about the anthropology of sports, travel, cooking and sometimes music. But yeah, baseball mostly.
