This Week in Balls

Well, I got hit in the balls during pickup basketball this week, but I don’t think that’s what I meant by the title.

I did write about five straight balls that Yu Darvish threw to the same location in his disastrous first inning in his debut. He supposedly had terrible command, and yet there were five straight pitches to the same spot, and they were all balls. I think there was more (and less) to this first game than many thought. He showed that he had the ability to locate pitches, but that something was off. Perhaps it was his timing. I remain more optimistic about his future than Daisuke Matsuzaka‘s.

Later in the week, I tried to figure out which teams take the platoon advantage the most. Since the lefty/lefty or righty/righty matchups favor the pitcher, I thought it might be interesting to see which teams were the best at getting into those situations. It was a surprisingly tough venture.

It was for fantasy, but my piece about Danny Duffy could open some eyes. He’s got great upside. Jon Jay, on the other hand, is a much safer — and less interesting — play.

Finally, on the subject of balls, I wondered out loud which sport my son should play. He’s due any minute now, and the waiting is getting intense…

I write. About baseball, mostly, but also about the anthropology of sports, travel, cooking and sometimes music. But yeah, baseball mostly.
